From Team 4 to Foster Associates: Condensed Narratives and Expanded Storytelling, Gabriel Hernández
Team 4 Architects (1963–67) and Norman and Wendy Foster’s Foster Associates (1967–92) are usually read through buildings rather than drawings. This article argues that drawings shaped architectural narratives and design methodology. By analysing representational tools, it traces mediation and moments where tectonic innovation met anatomical techniques. It links these experiments to visual culture, with touchstones including Paul Rudolph, Gordon Cullen, Archigram and James Stirling. Drawing on archives in Spain, the UK and the US, plus interviews, it sorts the material into ‘condensed narratives’ and ‘expanded storytelling’, showing how “hacked” depictions became dynamic, engaging contributions to high-tech architecture and visual culture.
